Before you throw it out - put the iPod in a bag of instant rice... (still dry instant rice). Leave it in the rice for at least a week - maybe even longer.
The rice will absorb the water inside the iPod - you may still have a chance! I've done that with #1's cel phone after it went through the washing machine.
The key is to NOT turn it on. If you turned it on, and it "flashed" for a second - then died - you may have fried a component on the circuit board...
